After the Israelites had been released from their bondage as slaves to the Egyptians, God hardened Pharaoh’s heart and he again pursued them as they were defiantly marching out into the freedom God had given them.
Pharaoh came with every chariot and officer he possessed to overtake the children of God and have them serve him as slaves again.
Exodus 14:10 BSB
“As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up and saw the Egyptians marching after them, and they were terrified and cried out to the Lord.”
They were surrounded. A sea ahead and a fierce army of Egyptians closing in behind them. They panicked and doubted God’s providence, goodness and love for them. Did God lead them out of Egypt only to let them perish in the wilderness?
Exodus 14:13-14 BSB
13 ”But Moses told the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the Lord’s salvation, which He will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians you see today, you will never see again. 14 The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”“
To be still also means to be silent, be dumb, be speechless, to be deaf. It made me think that the Egyptians must have been very loud and threatening as they pursued the Israelites - probably shouting how they would have victory, level the Israelites to the ground, and take them back to a life of slavery. It must have been terrifying turmoil!
Moses told the Israelites to be still, to be deaf. The Israelites needed to close their ears, like someone that's deaf, to keep their eyes and hearts fixed on God and the salvation He was busy orchestrating on their behalf.
In this account we see how God protected them, created a way for them (where there was none), and how He dealt with their enemies, victoriously! We only need to be deaf.
Whatever battle you are in now, don’t lose hope. The Lord fights for you! Shut your heart to every thought of defeat, hurt and past disappointments. Don’t glance backward, you’re not going that way. God goes before you and that’s where you are going. Fix your eyes on Him. Where you’re going, abundance of breakthrough and freedom from your enemies, await you. Don’t be unsure, your Papa is taking you into your promised land. Keep on leaning on Him and holding tight to every promise He has given you.
